Neck pain is a common ailment that can lead to missed work, inability to sleep, and inability to participate in daily activities of life. Chiropractic care for neck issues may play an important role in identifying the underlying cause for one’s pain and correcting the problem. This can result in pain alleviation and a better quality of life. Neck pain may be a result of aging, general wear and tear arthritis (such as facet syndrome from facet joint arthritis), tight muscles (spasm and guarding), poor posture, herniated discs, or degenerative disc disease. Pain generating from a neck problem may radiate into the head, traps, shoulders, arms, and hands. It can mimic the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow.

In order to figure out why a patient is having neck pain, a chiropractor will perform a detailed musculoskeletal history and physical. He or she will evaluate to check the patient’s tenderness, range of motion, and neurologic function.

Imaging studies may be recommended including x-rays and/or an MRI to look at the bony and soft tissue anatomy. Once the underlying problem is figured out, the chiropractor can tailor a comprehensive treatment plan specifically tailored to the patient’s needs.

Typical treatment regimens will include chiropractic adjustments, physical rehabilitation, PT/Rehab, stretching, and maybe spinal decompression therapy.

In addition, the treatments may include heat/ice, electrical stimulation, laser therapy, and massage therapy.

Chiropractic care has been proven to be safe and effective treatment for neck pain. Studies have shown patients are more likely to get into a car accident on the way to treatment rather than have an adverse event during chiropractic neck treatments.
